Description

Providing bike parking aims to improve amenities for cyclists by installing convenient and secure parking options. Local agencies can require bicycle parking minimums as part of their parking standards code and even offer incentives for converting 1 or 2 vehicle parking spaces to bicycle parking. Regional agencies can provide grants to cities and property owners to retrofit existing vehicle parking or other areas to house bicycle parking. This strategy encourages more people to choose biking as a reliable mode of transportation by ensuring secure and convenient bike parking options.

Implementation Details

  • Require Class II or III bicycle parking as a parking standard for new multifamily, commercial, and institutional developments.
  • Install bike racks or lockers that meet CalGreen standards at high-demand sites like libraries, parks, and SunLine bus stops
  • Include incentives for retrofitting older buildings through local parking code updates or sustainability grants.
  • Consider including bike parking standards that incorporate non-intrusive design.

Mitigation Potential

Providing bike parking provides security for bicyclists, enabling a shift from car use to biking. Improving security can improve biking as a more viable and convenient alternative to Single Occupancy Vehicle.

Linked Strategies

Equity Considerations

Secure and visible bike parking near schools, transit stops, and shopping centers benefits those who rely on bicycles for daily travel. Equity considerations include providing free or low-cost parking options in low-income areas, ensuring ADA-compliant access, and designing facilities to reduce theft risk in neighborhoods with limited bike infrastructure.

Funding Sources

Private funding sources developed as part of a project application. Local municipalities would most likely require a source of funding for initial purchase and installation. Combine with other active transportation or transit design elements/strategies to utilize those funding sources.
